we are | r e m o t e

we are a multidisciplinary creative studio based in Hokianga Aotearoa, specialising in animated and live-action video projects for broadcast, live events, and exhibition. We have a diverse skillset and can provide the full scope of production and creative direction from initial concepting through to delivery.

We have been in operation for nearly 20 years, and in this time the studio has created work for a host of clients including Whakaata Māori, Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland Museum, Te Kohangu museum at Waitangi, The Tāmaki Collective, TVNZ, RNZ, Discovery Channel and many others.

To date r e m o t e has had the honour of recieving of 5 Promax Media awards for animation and TV promo work, including 3 World Gold awards.

We are a small whānau led business with a core staff of 3, this keeps us nimble and able to accomodate a range of budgets and workflows. We have a wide network of talented freelancers with a variety of specialities, and we engage them as required on a project by project basis. Some of these kaimahi are local to Tai Tokerau, others are based elsewhere in Aotearoa and overseas. The nature of our mahi means that we can create regardless of physical location - hence our studio name.

As a pākihi Māori, our tīkanga, visions and values align well with indigenous projects, and as a result a lot of our mahi is in this space.

In spite of our remote location we strive to work collaboratively with our clients as much as possible - this how we do our best work.

We like to think of our projects as journeys we walk together.

Should you need some company on your next creative journey, please feel free to reach out for a chat; we’d love to hear from you.

Tā mātou nei te mihi nui ki a koe.

DAN MACE | CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Maru, Clan O’Boyle

Dan is a designer, illustrator, and filmmaker specialising in animation and time-based art.

As a professional director, editor and animator, Dan has making live-action and animated short films, music videos, television/online commercials, show titles and motion graphics for over 2 decades. As an artist Dan creates animated and static graphic and illustrated content for exhibitions, live performance, and video installations. Dan founded r e m o t e to ultimately enable production of this mahi from Waimamaku, Hokianga - the homeland of his partner and daughters.

A love of storytelling first drew Dan to the process of film making, and this connection with narrative, text and language has stayed with him, linking the various processes he employs in his work.

A shared aspect of Dan’s Māori and Irish heritage is the rich oral and visual traditions of both indigenous cultures. As his ancestors used materials such as wood, stone, linen and flax, Dan uses layers of digital media woven together to articulate stories, histories, and emotions.

RONA NGAHUIA OSBORNE | CREATIVE COLLABORATOR

Clan Fyfe, Clan Caduggan, Ngāi Tahu

Rona and Dan have been collaborating creatively as artists, business partners, and parents for over 25 years.

Outside of r e m o t e , Rona balances her time precariously across a range of mahi from costume and production design for film and live performance, running her design brand Native Agent, and creating paintings, ceramics and textile works as a practising artist.

Rona and Dan’s collaborative audio visual artworks have been shown internationally. Most recently their work “Kahumāku: A Cloak Of Tears” was shown in the Toi Tū Toi Ora exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery.

HUIA MARAMA OSBORNE | STUDIO MANAGER

Te Rarawa, Te Au Pouri

In truth the title ‘Studio Manager’ is a catchall term used to describe the multitude of roles that Huia handles.

She’s a competent all-rounder, running project schedules, production managing shoots, co-ordinating freelancers, client comms, sometimes model/stand in, researcher, creative sounding board, AND wrangling the studio mascots, her beautiful babies aged 1 and 3… which makes her the busiest in the team.
